چکیده

Results are presented of simulations of a stable boundary layer of moderate surface condition and zero overlying inversion strength. The layer depth is matched to model scale by artificially thickening the boundary layer by means of flow generators (‘spires’) at the working-section inlet. A non-uniform inlet temperature profile is essential in order to preclude the upper part of the layer retaining neutral conditions. The layer behaviour is sensitive to the prescribed form and care is needed in its specification. The results also show that the surface cooling should be started some distance downstream of the working-section inlet. The developed flow is closely horizontally homogeneous.

Revisiting the Local Scaling Hypothesis in Stably Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence: an Integration of Field and LaboratoryMeasurements with Large-eddy Simulations

The ‘local scaling’ hypothesis, first introduced by Nieuwstadt two decades ago, describes the turbulence structure of stable boundary layers in a very succinct way and is an integral part of numerous local closure-based numerical weather prediction models. However, the validity of this hypothesis under very stable conditions is a subject of on-going debate. In this work, we attempt to address t...

Simulation of entrainment near a density stratified layer: Laboratory experiment and LIDAR observation

In this paper a simple qualitative model of the growth of a mixed layer adjacent to a uniform layer with a stably stratified layer is presented. The depth variations of mixed layer can be estimated from direct measurements. The Entrainment of a stably stratified layer into a turbulent mixed layer in a confined region was studied in laboratory for different Richardson numbers. The internal waves...

Proceedings of the 51st Anniversary Conference of KSME PHYSICAL MODELING OF ATMOSPHERIC FLOW AND ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS

The philosophy of physical modeling of atmospheric flow is discussed with special emphasis on wind-tunnel simulation techniques. The governing equations of motion are analyzed for application of laboratory testing. Key similitude parameters such as Reynolds, Froude, Rossby, and Richardson numbers, as applied to wind-tunnel requirements, are discussed. Prevalent boundary condition requirements, ...

Improved atmospheric stable boundary layer formulations for Navy Seasonal Forecasting

Many large-scale weather forecast models prescribes too much turbulent mixing stably stratified conditions, which causes problems with the depth of nocturnal or high-latitude winter boundary layers, lack of inertially driven low-level wind maxima and inversion-capped low clouds. The link between the turbulent momentum flux and the associated Ekman pumping and therefore the lifetime of synoptics...

Turbulence Spectra and Dissipation Rates in a Wind Tunnel Model of the Atmospheric Convective Boundary Layer

A model of the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) is realized in the thermally stratified wind tunnel of the Institute of Hydrology and Water Resources, University of Karlsruhe. Further experimental results from this model are presented. The wind tunnel with a test section 10 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 1.5 m high allows one to generate a quasi-stationary, horizontally evolving CBL, charac...
